How to make homemade Coconut Oil

In the previous post  the benefits, uses and constituents of coconut oil was discussed.

The following steps are the procedure on how to make a homemade coconut oil

Step 1. Break the coconut
Firmly, hold the coconut crack it open with a hammer or any hard object.

Step 2. Remove the husk.
Using a kitchen knife, gently separate the coconut flesh from the husk.

Step 3. Blend or Grate the coconut
Hand grate the coconut using the fine side of a grater. Or for easier result, blend the coconut using a food blender.

Step 4: Sieve the coconut juice
Add about 2 cups of water to the blended or grated coconuts juice. Adding water helps in the sieving process. Using a neat chiffon material, gently sieve the coconut juice to separate the chaff from the juice.

Step 5. Heat the mixture
Pour the coconut juice into a pot and cook for about 20-30 minutes. Ensure you do not stir the mixture.


Step 5. Cool the cooked mixture
It’s advised to keep the mixture in the fridge or freezer. However, when these are not available, keep the mixture in an undisturbed place and allow to cool over night.

Step 6. Skim the juice

Once the mixture is cooled, the fat will separate from the water. The coconut fat will layer on top of the coconut water. Using a table spoon, gently skim the fat off and put it in a neat pot.

Step 7. Boil the coconut fat

Place the pot on a low heat and simmer for about 40-50 minutes. As it boils, the appearance changes. The oil will separate from the waste. Avoid stirring the mixture. Gently use a table spoon to take out the oil.
Step 8. Sieve and cool
Using a chiffon material the oil. Let it cool and viola! Your coconut oil is ready for use.

The oil can be used for hair, face and as an additional oil to body cream.
