FAKE: Trending video shows Indonesia airplane crash-landing

Garuda Indonesia Crash Landing

A fake video has been shared multiple times on social media showing an Indonesian passenger plane crash-landing.

The 36-second video, AFP learnt, was actually created by a YouTube user with computer-generated imagery.

Bloggers in Nigeria have shared the video with misleading headlines.

Instagram however noted beneath the video posted by a blogger that it was altered.

“The same partly false information was reviewed in another post by fact-checkers. There may be small differences. Independent fact-checkers say this information has some factual inaccuracies,” the platform said.

It was gathered that the video was first shared on Twitter on September 17, 2021 with the caption “Garuda Indonesia” referring to Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia.

The video appears to show smoke billowing from a passenger plane after it makes a bumpy landing on an airport runway.

The same video was viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Twitter in multiple languages.

It was learnt that the video was created with two clips merged using editing tools.

The second part of the video was a Caspian Airlines flight which veered off the runway in Iran’s Isfahan during landing after one of the aircraft’s gears collapsed on touchdown.

The incident was said to have happened on January 6.

Avherald, a website that publishes aviation incidents, said five of the 110 passengers were slightly injured when they were forced to evacuate with emergency slides.
