Again, Buni committee parries APC convention, to set up budget board

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a budget committee ahead of its planned convention, despite having no specific date in view.

National secretary of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), John James Akpanudoedehe, disclosed the committee was part of the resolutions reached at the party’s 18th regular meeting on October 20.

Mr Akpanudoedehe in his statement said the CECPC, among other things, “deliberated on the planned national convention and resolved to setup sub-committees on budgeting and other relevant structures for the national convention.”

Recall that in July, the CECPC had also set up various committees to address sundry aspects of the party.

Many of the committees got to work, made their submissions to the Governor Abubakar Badaru-led central coordinating committee but nothing has come up from that exercise.

The interim body, emplaced by fiat of the President Buhari-inspired NEC has been in office for 18 months with no significant success as party crisis continues to deepen.

The CECPC was charged with conducting national convention to elect new party executives following the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee in June 2020. The Committee is mulling February 2022 to hold the convention, but no specific date is decided.

Though the committee was handed a six-month term to conclude their assignment, it has twice enjoyed tenure extension with the support of President Buhari.

Some youths of the party have been at loggerheads with the Buni caretaker committee. They are asking for the national convention to be held and have dragged the committee to court.

On November 29, they announced the sack of Governor Mai Mala Buni as national chairman, announcing Mustapha Audu as his replacement.

The manner in which party members have continued to tussle for leadership positions has fuelled claims that the expiration of Buhari’s tenure in 2023 may end APC’s rule in Nigeria.
