  • Suspected armed robbers attack bullion van, cart away money in Delta

After a truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas exploded in Ohoror community, Ughelli North council, three people were reported dead and numerous homes were destroyed.

On Wednesday night, a collision involving two other trucks occurred at the famed Ohoror Junction in Uwheru Kingdom.

According to one of the community’s leaders, Simeon Okofo, who spoke to with News Men on phone, said about 25 homes were destroyed by the fire.

He stated that the incident occurred around 3 a.m., when many members of the community were still sleeping.

“A tanker loaded with fuel was parked along the road when a truck rammed into it, catching fire, dumping the fuel, and setting numerous houses on fire in the community,” he reported.

He also stated that two people were burnt to died while sleeping, and one of the seriously burned victims died before being rushed to the hospital; others with varying degrees of injuries were rushed to Ughelli hospitals.

Some of the injured were reportedly taken to the State University teaching hospital in Oghara.

Meanwhile, Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, paid a visit to the village yesterday and expressed his condolences to the residents, calling for an immediate investigation into the cause of the explosion.

The governor stated that no effort would be spared in totally extinguishing the fire, and instructed the State Director of Fire Service to remain on the scene until the fire was completely extinguished.

Okowa, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Sherrif Oborevwori, and the Secretary to the State Government, Patrick Ukah, praised the Fire Service for their quick response and advised the community to stay away from the scene while the government worked to avoid the spread of the explosion.

Earlier, Eugene Oziwele, the state’s Director of Fire Services, claimed his personnel were notified around daybreak and swiftly mobilized to the village.

President-General of Uwheru Kingdom, Macpherson Igbedi, also briefed the governor, saying that no fewer than 20 buildings were burned and urging additional efforts to evacuate abandoned gas-laden tankers before they explode.
Meanwhile, a squad of armed robbers ambushed a bullion van belonging to one of the new generation banks yesterday, stealing an undisclosed quantity of money.

The Bullion Van was successfully robbed along Otor-Owhe on the Ughelli-Asaba dual highway in Delta State’s Isoko North local government area, according to the Checheblogs.

It was unknown whether anyone was hurt, just as it was unclear where the bullion van was headed when the hoodlums hijacked it.

The robbers, it was learned, fired intermittent shots at the bullion vehicle, causing damage to the windscreen before looting the money unchallenged.

When called,  the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, verified the occurrence but claimed he had yet to receive specifics.
